Flora T. "Peggy" Doremus
Nurse 1930 Article

Here’s a newspaper article from 1930 which is about scholarships for war orphans & mentions Flora T. Doremus

The newspaper was from Bridgewater, NJ

…while Eleanor MacFarland is attending the Atlantic City High School, preparatory to becoming a nurse. In addition to these first two war orphans to qualify, two more have been approved this month by Adjutant General Gilkyson, who is in charge of the administration of the State Act, and a number of others are having their cases investigated to that end.

Those recently approved are:
Flora T. Doremus of Hackensack, the daughter of Captain Harry B. Doremus, of Company E, 114th Infantry, who was killed in action at Verdun, Oct. 25, 1918, and Florence Barrett of Long Valley, whose father, Alexander M. Barrett, died in the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, on Oct. 17, 1919. As a result of war service with the 102l New York. Engineers giant Dornier flying boat
DO-X today Portugal, the Azores and Bermuda. Be employed…

I’ve done some research; she graduated in 1932 from HHS.  Married a guy from Bogota name Burton Wilder, a Major in the Air Force during World War II.  He died in 1977.  I believe I’ve tracked down her daughter in AZ, sent an email.  I’ll let you know.

They lived on State Street so where would she have gone?  Broadway? or was Mercer a elementary school then? or Beech street was it built then?  That’s in Scudder material on our site?  I need to check that?  Fairmount School had old records and I found stuff on that of veterans like Brockner went there and Stone  --- Joe Cicchelli was principal then and it was old files of index cards.  But I don't know if other schools have that information and if we could get access to it?  Broadway school isn't a school anymore, so where is the records etc.  Is Peggy a nickname for Flora?

From the 1920 Census:

Flora T. Doremus is listed as the daughter of Mrs. Harry B. Doremus.  The questions is was she called  “Peggy“. Clearly the obituary failed to include her.  Do you have connections with the school where they can research her? She did attend school.  In 1920, she was about 6 years old, so she must have been about 4 in the photo with Walter Brown.
